Church steeples contribute to New England’s bucolic and scenic landscape. But like any old buildings, these churches, especially their steeples, need constant maintenance and care, an expensive task that often falls on the members of the church community. At the Evergreen United Methodist Church on Long Island in Casco Bay, built in 1880, the steeple and bell tower are in need of such renovation, which is too expensive for one congregation of 52 to fund through their usual budget. Trustee Shaun Rich proposed a fundraiser to assist with this expensive task — an old-fashioned lobster bake. Rich, an island lobsterman, asked his fellow fishermen to contribute their catches, and along with the lobsters, church members served up hamburgers, hotdogs, salads, corn on the cob and a plethora of desserts to the happy crowd that gathered on a glorious late summer Sunday afternoon. About $4,000 was raised, which will contribute greatly to the total amount of approximately $16,000 needed to fund the renovation. Thanks to one lobsterman who saw a solution to the need, the church steeple bell will ring again to invite all to enter and worship.
