To the editor:
I read Dan Hinckley’s letter [WWF Aug. 07], and I wanted to back up Philip Conkling in his pronunciation of Isle au Haut. When questioning the pronunciation of the name of a place, I have always thought one should take one’s cue from those who live there. Linda Greenlaw, who lives on Isle au Haut, says it is indeed pronounced I’ll-a hoe. I’ll take the word of someone who lives there over the word of someone whose father and grandfather lived nearby any day!
