To the editor:

I enjoyed reading the opinions of Steve Cartwright [WWF Aug. 05] and Jack Boak [WWF Sept. 05] in both articles about public transportation. I, too, look forward to “convenient, consistent, coordinated, clean, reasonably priced public transit with user-friendly schedule info serving the midcoast area. I must say what is currently available is not bad. I use public transportation to travel from my home in Hingham, Massachusetts, to my home in North Haven, Maine. I love the fact that not only is it cheaper than taking my car, it is more relaxing, and I can go in almost all weather conditions. I walk from my home in Hingham (20 minutes) to a bus, which takes me to a train in Quincy, MA, which takes me to South Station in Boston. I board a Concord Trailways bus to Rockland, Maine, and then a ferry to North Haven. I then walk another 20 minutes and I’m home again. With the price of gas and a ferry ticket for car and driver it is less expensive to use public transportation. There are obvious pros and cons, but once I learned to relax and enjoy the ride while someone else drives, I can read, sleep or watch a movie. Once on North Haven, it is me and my bike!

I look forward to the train connection between Portland and Brunswick – another option to get to Rockland, Maine and maybe on to Bangor.

We need alternatives and choices to travel to Maine and within the great state – it is worth it!
