To the editor:

In “Sustainability” (WWF June 05), Bob Moore responded heroically to the challenge of defining the word by writing the clearest description I have read. In a world where impermanence and disregard for both past history and the future are common, “the notion of longevity or resilience through time” and “an explicit awareness of generations to come, human or otherwise” are very reassuring.
Equally welcome is the adaptability of complex systems like the sea or farming. The greatest long range threat to the world as we know it is global warming. Planned adaptability will be a key to the survival of many islands and coastal areas, as extensive glacial melting occurs, causing the oceans to rise.
Peter Drinkwater (“Store for All Seasons,” WWF June 05) has extended the longevity of the Winter Harbor 5 & 10 and adapted to his customers’ needs. I brought the story to Maine with me on a recent visit to Bangor and Houlton, my hometown. My cousin, who lives in Bangor, and I found many items in the store that we really needed.
Thank you very much for both articles.
