The Boothbay Region Land Trust will host the 2005 Boat Builders Festival on Sunday, August 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults, free for children under 12.

Working Waterfront columnist Roger Duncan, an East Boothbay resident, described last year’s version of this show this way, in part:

“The 2004 First Annual Boat Builders Festival … was all that Boothbay region residents and its organizers, The Boothbay Region Land Trust, had hoped it would be; and it was all about the Boothbay region.

“Remember a perfect Maine day, warm but not hot, with a gentle southwest wind bringing a breath of open ocean up the Damariscotta River to East Boothbay. Visitors and local residents crowded the wharf at Ocean Point Marina where Donald Duncan of Southport in full regalia skirled the pipes. Alongside the wharf lay the brigantine OLIVER C. WEYANT, her tall topmasts and square yards attracting people who had never seen a square rigged vessel and who had never trod a deck. Her builder stood by the gangway welcoming visitors aboard….

“When you could tear yourself away… you could visit the well-known schooner BOWDOIN, built in 1921 by the Hodgdon yard on this very site…

“After visiting these historic sailing vessels, the hungry visitor could sit on a bench in the sun and enjoy an excellent lunch of chowder, lobster roll, clam roll, mussels or oysters, all from Boothbay region’s waters. Pies built in East Boothbay kitchens provided dessert. It was rumored that hog dogs, French fries, and Coke were also available…

“If you had a case of “museum feet” by this time, you made your way back to your car, impressed by the skill, power and creative artistry on this narrow peninsula between two rivers. You had missed a great deal. Come back in 2005 on August 7.”
