Ngubo Ndaba arrived at Islesboro Central School on Jan. 5, one of the chilliest days of winter, to undertake a year-long teaching assignment replacing math teacher Tom Tutor who is taking over Ndaba’s classes in South Africa (WWF Dec-Jan 04-05).

He was welcomed to the school by principal Michael Wright and superintendent Don Kanicki in an all-school assembly, where Ndaba spoke about looking forward to smaller classes and island life. The students welcomed him with a gift presentation and a rendition of a South African song. The assembly also bid a fond farewell to the Tutor family, which had stayed on-island for a few days to help Ndaba adjust to his new home and classroom. The school staff held a brief get-together after school and a community potluck supper is planned soon to welcome the visiting teacher to Islesboro.
