Regular ferry service to Islesboro was delayed on Oct. 28 while the island’s ferry was used for the HBO movie production of “Empire Falls.” Moviemakers filled the ferry with 1950s-vintage cars and gave some islanders a surprise when they pulled into line. Camden resident Richard Russo wrote the screenplay based on his Pulitzer Prize winning novel. Much of the filming took place in Skowhegan and Waterville, as the film is set primarily in a rural Maine town. In the movie, Islesboro’s ferry becomes the Martha’s Vineyard ferry. The filming excited some and angered others as it created delays for those using the ferry and the dock facilities. Islanders and other Maine residents worked as extras. The completed film is set to air on HBO in 2004. (Nakomis Nelson photos)
