North Haven came together on March 8 for a rich discussion that covered 92 articles in five hours. Tom Marx, the school superintendent, led the town through a process that resulted in a majority of articles passing. Highlights were discussions of education, recreation, the library and most important, the hiring of an island doctor.

After much discussion about the pros and cons of hiring an island doctor the island put aside a significant amount of money to hire a full-time doctor who will bring not only his skills to the community but also a large family that will become a part of the North Haven school.

Residents later joined in a lively discussion on issues surrounding the use and maintenance of the community gymnasium. Younger members of the voting community voiced concern that the gym remain open for use beyond what is offered in the current timetable. More senior community members saw the gym for its potential as a wellness center serving all ages. The article for the gym passed, although everyone agreed that the matter needs further consideration with regards to funding and staffing in the future.

A passionate discussion about the responsibility of the community in caring for graveyards preceded the passing of an article that will ensure the continued care and documentation of veterans’ graves. Other discussions highlighted the importance of the library to the community, and the amount of money allocated by the budget committee was raised to equal that of previous years. Finally, the town agreed to put aside money to resolve a disagreement over the status of a road that provides access to one of the island’s harbors.
