Peaks Island residents kicked off their first annual PeaksFest June 21 with a clever “Images of Peaks Island” event calling for families to bring in old photos, postcards and drawings of the island to share and “rekindle the community heritage of Peaks Island.” A night of Jazz by Julie Goell and food from Happy Cooking Restaurant followed.

In spite of mostly drizzly overcast weather, participants took part the next day in a rummage sale, bake sale, face painting and BBQ on the lawn of the American Legion Hall. From 1:30 to 3 p.m., attendees were treated to the Decorated Bike Peaks Pie Parade. Led by the Peaks Island’s Fire Truck many undaunted, albeit wet, kids on bikes paraded through town arriving on the lawn of St. Christopher’s Church for a pie-eating contest.

Other notable events of the festival included tours of Portland’s Fireboat, a 24-hour team scavenger hunt, cruises on the schooner BAGHEERA, a contradance, a drum circle, kayak demonstrations, and an open house at the Fifth Maine Civil War museum.
