Town meeting began on Matinicus Island at 7 p.m. on April 27 in the New School, with 36 people in attendance. After nominating Maury Colton moderator, a motion was made to skip to the last article on the agenda, Article 44, wherein the town allows non-residents the ability to speak regarding issues not outlined in the warrant.

The motion passed, and Kevin Waters, Rockland Manager of Telford Aviation, who had flown in minutes before meeting’s start, spoke regarding flight service to the island. Waters stressed the need for open communication between residents and Telford, and called for their suggestions and ideas, remarking that with more input he could address their needs more effectively. Consistent “caravan service” one day a week, departing the island at 9 a.m. and returning by 5 p.m. was discussed.

Residents agreed to use $10,000 from taxes and $5,000 from surplus for repairs to the Old School, currently used as town offices. Plantation Charges totaling $9,850 passed as stated, all other housekeeping issues passed either as stated or with slight amendments. Amusing comments were made as to who would receive the pledge cup for the community’s $200 donation to support Maine PBS.

New plantation officials for 2003 are Jasmine Tinker, Plantation Clerk and Registrar of Voters. Karen South will assume the one-year Director of SAD #65 position to work alongside re-nominated 3-year seat holder Sari Bunker. An amendment to Article 41 divided the positions of Constable and Animal Control Officer and re-designated each to be filled by nomination, rather than assignment. Marty Molloy will fill the Animal Control Officer seat while the Constable position remains vacant.

Positions sought and won by unopposed incumbents are Eva Murray, Treasurer; Paul Murray, Tax Collector; Vance Bunker, Third Assessor (3-year term). Dennis Young and Weston Ames will continue as First and Second assessors, respectively.

Other issues discussed that were not outlined in the warrant were concerns over continuation of waiting lists through the State Ferry Service, warranting additional runs, and enforcement of time limits for vehicles occupying space on the town wharf. (Currently the ferry service runs 27 trips per year to Matinicus. However, 36 trips per year are allowed should demand warrant).

At the end of the meeting Sari Bunker presented a lifetime service award to Warren and Harriet Williams “In heartfelt appreciation of 16 years of hard work as tax collector and treasurer”. Their legacy lives on with another husband and wife team, Paul and Eva Murray, currently assuming the same roles.

Due to an amendment, next year’s town meeting will be held at 6 p.m.
